This is Kurdistan: Picnic in Qaradagh

Spring is the season for picnics in Kurdistan. Especially in South Kurdistan people really love them. On Fridays cities and towns are empty when people go to the mountains.

I was on picnic in Qaradagh (south from Sulaymania) at the beginning of April. We grilled fish.

Looks like fun.

I'm not a fishologist - what kind of fish? And, what else did you have?

I notice that I need to write more about the cuisine. Kurds love meat, it's uncommon to eat fish. It's not easily available here, and very expensive. Picnics are a way to experience the nature, people take very big meals with them. We ate fish with bread and salad, like Kurds eat all their meals. I try to write something about Kurdish food, but my problem is that I'm very busy and I don't have internet at home.

That was going to be my next question, was where did the fish come from? If I'm not mistaken, there are no big lakes in Iraqi Kurdistan, the nearest sea is quite a distance away... I can imagine fish would be difficult to get and expensive.

As Kurdish cuisine, Wikipedia mentions lamb and chicken, rice and flat breads - isn't that typical throughout the mountainous region that separates the southern coastal countries of Asia from Russia?

It must be difficult with no Internet access. I understand Kurdistan doesn't have nearly the troubles as the rest of Iraq, but still, take care and I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to the article on Kurdish cuisine.

you must be joking me...!!!! Kurdistan is rich of natural water and springs! there are five main rivers in Iraqi Kurdistan which they all got dams on them which makes them a big sources of fish, and there are many of local people who live on fish business, and these rivers are all spread out in Kurdistan and this makes them easy to access from any part of Kurdistan. plus its tooo cheap!! I live in Uk and i have never ever tasted a fish as tasty as kurdistans!
